Letter: Redevelop United Hospital Site Responsibly

THE JOURNAL NEWS-LOHUD

October 24, 2015

Neighborhood Preservation Company for Human Development Services of Westchester supports responsible development at the United Hospital site.

We support redevelopment in the village and want to see a successful outcome of this project. However, we believe that when the public invests in private developments like this one, they must be built and operated in a way that creates real, long-term value for both developers and communities.  As a result, we feel that the United Hospital redevelopment has to reflect the needs of Port Chester residents.

Good jobs, affordable housing, and significant funding for our public schools and community services, are issues impacting village residents. We urge elected officials of the Village of Port Chester and members of the Industrial Development Agency (IDA) to work with Starwood Capital to develop a plan that better reflects our community needs via the creation of a Community Benefits Agreement.

As an agency that has been involved in promoting responsible housing in Port Chester for more than 40 years, we have seen both positive and negative development affect this community and its residents. We hope that this new development can be beneficial to the village as a whole, but only if we apply the lessons learned from past experiences.
