Legal Clinic

Date: Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 7:00pm
Location: Parish Hall of St. Peter’s Church, 19 Smith Street, Port Chester

The Sustainable Port Chester Alliance held a two-part legal clinic intended for local businesses of the village. The first part was to inform business owners of the potential displacement that their businesses could suffer due to the impending development happening in Port Chester and how they can better prepare for it. The second was for business owners to sit with attorneys from PACE University to ask any questions they had regarding their lease, rents, property taxes etc.

Port Chester business owners who attended our legal clinic found it very helpful and informative. Fernando from 4 Guys Deli said, “It was real helpful to understand our rights so we can protect our business.”

Educating Port Chester’s business owners about their rights and how they can improve the terms and conditions of their leases will benefit and sustain local businesses in our community going forward.

Climate Town Hall

Date: Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at 6:30pm
Location: Parish Hall of St. Peter’s Church, 19 Smith Street, Port Chester

While climate change presents an enormous threat to our civilization, readily available local solutions can make a real difference.  We are bringing together a group of experts and local community leaders to ask:

  • How can Port Chester dramatically reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and help prevent a climate disaster?
  • How can villages like ours produce local, clean and affordable electricity from renewable power sources?
  • How can our village ensure that a swift transition to a green economy produces good jobs and economic justice for all of us?
  • How can we personally reduce our carbon footprint?

Public Scoping Hearing at the Board of Trustees meeting

Date: Monday, October 15th at 7pm
Location: Village Courthouse, 350 N. Main Street, Port Chester

When a local government starts a rezoning, it must measure the “environmental impacts” of the rezoning.  This includes things you might think of as “the environment,” like parks and open space, but also impacts on people, rents, businesses, and important places (like schools) in the area.

At a public scoping hearing, we, the people of Port Chester, get to tell the Board of Trustees what environmental impacts we think are important to be studied before the Trustees approve the rezoning.  It’s our first chance to weigh in on the rezoning and make sure the Trustees know that they have to look at how it will affect how much rent we pay, whether our schools become more overcrowded, and how high or low our wages are.

Join us to tell the Trustees that they must study all these impacts and make sure we the downtown rezoning creates real benefits for our community, like affordable housing and good jobs!

Community Conversation on Rezoning hosted by
Sustainable Port Chester Alliance

Date: Wednesday, October 24th
Location: Knights of Columbus, 327 Westchester Avenue, Port Chester

Join us for an important conversation about what is happening with the downtown redevelopment, how could affect you, and what we can do to make sure it benefits Port Chester residents instead of hurting us.

We’ll talk with experts about exactly what the Village is planning to do with the rezoning, what the process for approving it is, and how it could change our community.

Then we’ll strategize together about how we can make sure the project includes important community benefits and protections, so the Village doesn’t end up using our tax money against us.

Date: Monday, November 5th
Location: Salsa Picante Restaurant, 110 Adee Street, Port Chester

T’was the night before mid-term elections when all through the House,
representatives are nervous, cause we’re gonna throw most of them out!

Joins us for a final GOTV push, good food and good drink. Alliance happy hours have become the go-to event in the village.  We’ll have some laughs and perhaps play a game or two – you know how we love our games!
